The hill down towards Svendborg Sound has been the site of a beautiful maritime town since the 13th century. Take time to have a look around before starting the route. Maybe a trip on the water if the youngest members of the family have sufficiently strong sea legs?

Set aside a few hours to see the highlights of Kerteminde before venturing out onto the route. The harbour is atmospheric. Visit the Johannes Larsen Museum which is housed in the Funen painter’s home on Møllebakken.

Rudkøbing-Lohals-Spodsbjerg is a 72-kilometre-long scenic circular route of which 67 kilometres are paved roads. The remaining five are good gravel roads. The route starts in the largest town on Langeland. Rudkøbing Pharmacy is particularly famous: This is HC Andersen's birthplace. Today it is a very well-preserved museum offering a wealth of jars with odd medicines for visitors to shiver at.

No other national route in Denmark contains contrasts as great as the West Coast Route. To the south, rich, flat marshland. To the north, steep and dramatic sand dunes. The West Coast Route is the story of man and sea. A 560-kilometre-long story about life on nature's terms.
Approx. 70% of the route is paved, but long sections consist of sand and gravel tracks. We recommend solid tyres.
The West Coast Route forms part of the European EuroVelo Route no. 12 which is part of the North Sea Cycle Route running from Scotland to Norway. The route is the longest cycle route in the world and runs through seven countries. Find out much more about the North Sea Cycle Route at

Until the establishment of the new Baltic Sea route in 2018, the trip from North Jutland to Als was Denmark's longest, national cycle route. The coastal route starts in Hulsig north of Frederikshavn and ends in Sønderborg after 660 beautiful kilometers. For the most part you cycle on paved roads, and the stretches on smaller paths are mostly good gravel paths.
